Do this to optimize your Instagram Bio

Your Instagram Bio is far more important than you think. It’s doing more than just informing your profile visitor about what you do. 

It actually has different purposes to serve. And that can be pretty challenging as you only have 150 characters to use.

And when I start talking about SEO I bet you just back off while thinking, oh no, not here too… 
Well, yes. Here too. But I will guide you to make the most out of your Instagram Bio, without going nuts.  

 

An important but limited space

The bio is important as that’s what every visitor read. Meaning that you want to put as much information in it as possible.  

One thing when it comes to the digital world is that we only have seconds to stand out in the buzz. No one is reading a long essay about what you do, who you are serving, what your dog’s name is and what you prefer to eat for breakfast… 

So even if it’s extremely annoying that you only have 150 characters to use, it’s a good thing. Because it forces you to be more on point.

Even if you should not write too much you need to be smart and let the different places for information work together in order to be able to say as much as possible.

It sounds difficult, but let’s take this step by step.

 

ACCOUNT/USER NAME

Maybe the easiest thing is your business name. It should be as easy and memorable as possible. You probably already have this part done but something to consider is to avoid to add a lot of random numbers if your desirable account name already is taken.

 

PROFILE PICTURE

If you are a personal brand or a small business owner. The picture should always be a picture of YOU. Your logo might be the prettiest, but it’s not creating any personal connection or relation which is so important as you are selling your personality more than your services or products.

Also try to not change it too often since your pictures will be a synonym with your content. If you change it, people might not make the connection that the content comes from your account. 

 

PROFILE NAME

This is NOT the same as your account name. I see many having the same name here as the account name which is a HUGE waste. 

You only have 30 characters here but you should use your business keywords here. 

I know that only the thought of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) gives you hiccups, but yes, your Instagram Bio needs some SEO love. 

When searching on instagram, the profile name is ranking in the search.

At my Instagram account my profile name was at first Digital Designer. But now I have changed to Website and Canva Templates, cause not so many are searching for digital designers as they do for canva templates… 

Now when you type Canva Template in the Instagram search bar, my account shows in the list of results.

 

BIO DESCRIPTION

Now you only have those 150 characters to present yourself and your business. It is tricky. But it’s easier when you let the description work together with your profile name. 

Let the profile name be the headline and the bio the description. 

In the headline you inform what you do ro sell specifically. And in the bio inform who you serve and what problem you are solving

And with a problem, it can be anything from losing weight to having the children’s portrait taken under laughter.

This part should always end with a CTA (call to action) but more about that part later.

 

WEBSITE

Instagram only allows you to have one link. A popular workaround is to use a service like Linktree, or create a similar solution directly at your website provider. Meaning that you have an address that directs the follower to a page where you show a several of different links. 

There are different opinions about how this collection of links are good or not. Many means that this is more a distraction, that the visitor is losing the focus and starts clicking around instead of just executing the direct action you want them to do. That one link gives a higher conversion as they only got one option.

I have myself a collection of links. Most because in my posts I encourage people to visit different parts of my business, it can be a new blog post, visit my Etsy Store or sign up for my newsletter. 

Even if our posts have a short life, people are visiting older posts and I want them to find the link I mention in the post even if it’s a post that is a week old. 

No matter how you decide to do it, you should have a CTA (call to action) in your bio that makes the visitor click at the link. 

My best advice is to sell your opt-in/freebie in your bio. As your email list building always should be a priority.

Everything is easier with examples. So I have created two accounts (they are not real) just to show you how everything I just mentioned can look like in reality.

ACCOUNT NAME: Yourname_Photography

PROFILE NAME: Ohio Wedding Photographer 

BIO DESCRIPTION: For the classic bride that cherish timeless portraits that will last for more than a lifetimeFree checklist to the best venues in Ohio.

 

ACCOUNT NAME: Yourname_Kitchen

PROFILE NAME: Plant Based Recipes

BIO DESCRIPTION: Simple everyday recipes that are healthy and gluten free for the whole family.

Give you Instagram Bio som love

Take around 30 minutes to change your Instagram Bio. It doesn’t have to take much longer but it will make a difference for your potential clients.

Just don’t make it too difficult for yourself. Start and then you can go back tweaking it when you feel that you want to make some adjustments.
