Want to attract mamas who value beautiful motherhood portraits? I design brands and websites that tell your story, the way you tell theirs - authentically and thoughtfully.
My years photographing these precious moments showed me exactly what makes families connect with their photographer, and now I help you create that same connection
When it comes to SEO, traffic and ranking are closely connected. The more people who land on your site, the more Google sees it as a place worth showing to others. And yes, the higher you rank, the more traffic you naturally get. It can feel a little bit like a loop, but the good part is you don’t have to wait around for Google to send people your way. You can take small steps to bring more visitors to your motherhood photography website yourself, and that traffic still makes a difference.

Google’s main goal is to show people the most helpful and trustworthy results. One of the ways it decides which websites are worth recommending is by looking at how many people are visiting them. If more visitors are spending time on your site, clicking through pages, and finding what they need, that signals to Google that your website is a good match for others searching the same thing.
For example, if a mom searches for newborn photography in your area and lands on your website, what she does next really matters. If she stays to read your newborn session information, browses a few blog posts, and looks through your galleries, Google sees that your site was a good fit for what she was looking for. And over time, that helps Google feel more confident about showing your website to the next mom searching for newborn photography nearby.
This means that sending people to your site is not only helpful for potential clients, it also works in the background to slowly build your SEO. The more traffic flows through your site, the more Google sees it as relevant.
One of the most common places you send people to your website is on Instagram. It might be in a story where you say read more on my website, or when someone writes to you in a DM.
For example, a mom sends you a message saying she loves your photos and wants to know more about booking. You thank her warmly and send your family session link right away. The problem is, once that link goes out, the conversation often stops there. She clicks, scrolls to your prices, and then slips off to compare you with a handful of other photographers.
Instead, pause before you share the link. Ask her what she is hoping for or what kind of session she has in mind. That little bit of conversation makes the link feel like a natural next step instead of the end of the exchange. And when she does click through, she is already connected to you, which means she is more likely to spend time on your site instead of bouncing off quickly.
Bounce rate is simply how quickly someone leaves your website after clicking on it. If they land on a page and then click away right away, that counts as a bounce. The more that happens, the more it tells Google people are not finding what they need there.
The goal is to have people stay longer and move around to other pages. That is why your website should never feel like a dead end. Every page should naturally lead to another step, whether that is reading more about your sessions, looking at galleries, or heading to your contact page. Even short pages can work well as long as there is always something that keeps the person moving instead of leaving right away.
This does not mean you should avoid sending people to your site. Traffic is always a good thing. It just helps to be intentional about where you send them and make sure the page invites them to stay a little while.
A page that holds attention is always better than one that someone clicks off right away. For example, many photographers still use PDFs for investment guides or welcome guides, but having those guides as pages on your website is so much more powerful. Not only do they look polished and professional, but parents usually spend time reading through them carefully, sometimes more than once. That longer time on your site is good for SEO and good for building trust.
The same goes for your blog. This is one of the best places to send people when they have a specific question or worry. Maybe a mom is nervous that her toddler will not sit still for photos. Instead of giving a quick answer in a DM, you can send her to a blog post where you show behind the scenes of a session with a wild little one, and how it still turned out beautifully. That kind of content not only eases her mind, but it also keeps her on your site reading and connecting with your work. This way of using blog posts is something I go more in depth on in my Blogging Masterclass.
Both your investment guide and welcome guide can also become pages that parents return to again and again. They are full of information people want to take in, so they naturally spend more time there. That time matters both for your relationship with the client and for Google, which sees your website as more valuable when people stay longer.
Think of these as little shifts you can make in the way you share links. None of them are complicated, but they add up over time.
All of this can sound like a lot, but it does not have to be overwhelming. SEO will always be a long term game. It is not something you fix overnight, and some parts, like driving traffic, do not always give you an instant result you can measure right away. But every small step you weave into your normal routine makes a difference. By sending people to your site in thoughtful ways, you are not only helping your SEO, you are also giving parents a reason to spend more time with your work and your words.
Getting more people to your website is only one part of it. What they find when they get there matters just as much. The design, copy, structure and SEO all need to work together, which is exactly what I build into my custom Showit websites for newborn, maternity and family photographers.
